Transcription stays on your Mac.

Transcripted records and transcribes on your Mac. Your audio, transcripts, and dictations are saved in local files. Writing is saved too if you enable Save my writing.

App data

Transcripted is built around local files. Your transcripts, notes, and metadata are saved on your Mac.

No account or cloud transcription is required. Transcription works offline once the selected speech model is available. Writing autocomplete uses a local model with a separate download.

Optional AI connections

You choose whether to connect an AI tool or share your files. A connected tool can read the notes you allow it to access. If it uses a cloud provider, that provider may receive and process those notes under its own settings and policies.

Usage statistics and crash reports

Anonymous usage statistics and crash reporting are enabled by default. The app uses PostHog for usage events and Sentry for crash reports and selected diagnostics. These reports are filtered to exclude audio and transcript text.

You can turn either off in Settings > General > Privacy. These settings control reporting separately from local transcription.

Downloads and updates

The app uses the internet to download models and check for updates. Model downloads can happen during setup or when you choose another model. Update checks use the public release feed; downloading an update also needs an internet connection.

The website links to signed releases hosted on GitHub. Visiting GitHub or downloading the app may be logged by GitHub.

If you report a bug through GitHub, the information you share there is handled by GitHub.
